Kenneth J. Mandell, M.D., Ph.D.

CEO & Director

An ophthalmologist-by-training with extensive early-stage development expertise, Dr. Mandell has developed novel drugs and drug delivery approaches for various topical and injectable applications. Dr. Mandell previously served as Chief Medical Officer of Noveome Biotherapeutics, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Aldeyra Therapeutics and President of Xcovery Vision.  He is an advisor to multiple private and public biotech companies.  Prior to forming LayerBio, Dr. Mandell was a Research Affiliate at MIT in the lab of his co-founder, Dr. Paula Hammond.


Aleksandr White, M.Eng.

Vice President

Aleks is an expert in polymer thin films and surface engineering. His technical experience spans R&D, process development, and technology scale-up. Aleks provides technical direction to product development activities across LayerBio’s current R&D portfolio. He previously worked at GVD Corporation where he played a leading role in the development and commercialization of the company’s proprietary polymer coating technology. There he also served as Director of Advanced Program Initiatives where he was responsible for strategic planning and pursuit of new commercial opportunities across various industries. Aleks received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and his M.Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT.


Charles L. Cooney, Ph.D.


Dr. Cooney is Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at MIT and has been a member of the MIT faculty since 1970.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Sanofi Biosurgery, Greenlight Biosciences, Codiak Biosciences, Enevolv, and Axcella Health Innovent Biologics. He previously served as Director of Genzyme Corporation from 1983 to 2011 and as Faculty Director of the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at MIT. He is a Trustee of the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library, Trustee Emeritus of Boston Ballet, and Overseer Emeritus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.


Paula Hammond, Ph.D.

Director & Co-Founder

Dr. Hammond is the David H. Koch Professor in Engineering and head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. She was elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 2017, the National Academy of Medicine in 2016, and the 2013 Class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Hammond’s awards include the Junior Bose Faculty Award, GenCorp Signature University Award, NSF Career Award, EPA Early Career Award, the DuPont Young Faculty Award, and the 3M Innovation Fund Award.  Dr. Hammond is an expert in nanotechnology and polymer films for drug delivery.
